I am the proud owner of a St. Bernard, the last in a long line of wonderful canine companions I have enjoyed over the years.

One thing I’ve noticed is how much dogs sleep—and how much they LOVE to sleep. Of course how much a dog naps depends on the dog, his personality and his age. Apparently, however on average, most dogs sleep about fourteen hours a day.

No one is entirely clear why dogs sleep so much. Of course every species has different sleeping patterns. I read recently that a horse or a cow many sleep only three or four hours a day where as a bat or an opossum may sleep up to 20 hours!

Within the dog species, various breeds have different sleep requirements. The very large breed of dogs (like the Newfoundlands, Saint Bernards or mastiffs) can sleep from 16-18 hours a day. This is why they have been nicknamed the ‘mat dogs’. You can always be sure to find them lying in front of the fireplace in supine position.

But while dogs sleep more than a human being, they also wake up much more frequently. How much and when they sleep is also directly related to their activity level. A dog that is a pet in a home sleeps more than a dog who works on a farm.

A dog’s sleep pattern is like humans. When he first goes to sleep, he goes into a quiet phase of sleep. He is still, his breathing slows, his blood pressure and body temperature drop. After about 10 minutes, your dog enters into rapid eye movement (REM) or what is known as an active stage of sleep. He may whine or bark or even jerk his legs. This stage is similar to the dreaming sleep of humans.

Adult dogs spend around 10% of their sleeping time in REM sleep, with puppies spending a greater portion of their sleeping time in REM.

Many believe that a dog can sleep ‘anywhere’. Many dogs however are very particular about where they sleep. Dogs like sheltered places such as under a bed or a closet. You may have noticed your dog circling before he settles. This is an attempt to make a comfortable, den-like spot to sleep.
